School bus companies in the United States

9,336 private carriers in the U.S. report school buses to the FMCSA. They run student transport contracts for districts and private schools, plus field trips, camps, sports and activity trips. Public school districts that run their own buses are not listed.

Before you hire one

  • Ask whether drivers hold a CDL with school bus (S) and passenger (P) endorsements and pass drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ask about the age of the fleet and the state school bus inspection record.
  • For trips across state lines, check that the company has active FMCSA passenger authority.
  • Confirm insurance limits and who is responsible for chaperones and stops.

Questions

Can a school bus company do field trips and private charters?

Many private school bus contractors also rent buses for field trips, camps, church groups and events. Rules differ by state, so ask whether the bus and driver are approved for the trip you plan.

Are school buses safe?

School buses are among the safest road vehicles in the U.S. because of their size, color, flashing lights and compartmentalized seats. Choose a carrier with a clean inspection and safety record.

How do I check a school bus company?

Look up its USDOT number on FMCSA SAFER, ask your state’s school transportation office about its inspection results, and check that it has a Satisfactory or no FMCSA safety rating (not Conditional or Unsatisfactory).
